Master-Disciple Dialogue – The Real Purpose of Practising Kriya

Anweshan January 2020 EditionThe Kriyabans have to strengthen the belief that for some reason we are born as per the will of the Creator. Many Kriyabans say that though they are practicing Kriya daily, yet they are not feeling motivated or inspired. Actually, the fact is, Kriya is not a tool for personal fulfillment or liberation. This method is an effort to “bring the divine power, light, and consciousness into you, and to elevate yourself to a superhuman state”. – (Sri Aurobindo)

Among the core principles of yoga, the most important are faith, deep yearning, complete submission, and non-possessiveness. The state of the physical beings of the world is ready for evolution, but the being wants to remain within its limits. He forgets the reason for his birth due to the influence of Maya. He wants to be a slave to arrogance and powers. Every human seeks happiness in life, and this very desire attracts grief and sorrows.

Kriyabans should aim towards divine consciousness. If a divinity-intoxicated mind maintains its perpetuity, the divine knowledge will manifest. One must try to rise above conditioning, bargaining, and vanity while maintaining one’s faith; the tendency to evaluate the work of others as a judge or critic must be abandoned. The reason why you have received kriya should be remembered, and with the help of kriya, you should try to elevate your consciousness towards the divine consciousness.

The person who says these things to the people is the “Guru”, and the people who are influenced by hearing these words, are the disciples. The Guru is strongly connected with the disciple. One of the first conditions in a guru-disciple relationship is obedience. The “I” is the ego consciousness that keeps the disciple away from the divine knowledge. In this state, it’s not possible for the disciple to understand what it means to be obedient. Egoism is the covering of the soul that creates a misconception about oneself and the world and veils the pure consciousness.

One of the important qualities of a disciple is being obedient to the Guru. The concept of obedience does not make sense to many. For many, being obedient means constriction. What exactly is obedience? This means stripping the restless mind of its day-long external activities, abstaining from bad habits, and finally becoming rooted to the right goals.

To be a true disciple, you have to surrender your restless mind and eccentric desires to the Guru. At the time of the kriya initiation, the disciple pledges, “I will obey these laws with all my heart”, but one’s ego does not always comply with this discipline. If these methods (kriya) are practiced every day as instructed by the Guru, the outlook of the kriyaban begins to become pure. Now he is no longer attached to the thoughts and actions that led him to make a mistake; he can easily distinguish between good and evil. The Guru always keeps his watchful eyes on his disciple. At the appropriate time, he instructs his disciple to proceed as per his own thoughts.

In this way, the transformed disciple is filled with reverence, strength, and humility. Learning to respect someone, brings reverence, and this reverence leads to humility.

When a kriyaban learns to respect the Guru as a representative of God, and man as an image of God, it’s then that the spiritual prosperity of the kriyaban begins to flourish.

The method given by Gurudeva should be practiced with reverence and faith. At first, many people may not be able to do kriya properly but practicing with moderation gives results. Many kriyabans / devotees think that just merely taking initiation or following the Guru makes them entitled to Guru’s grace, and the Guru will do everything for them on their behalf. Our ancient scriptures have explained this to the seeker very beautifully by clearing this misconception. To attain spiritual strength, a seeker or devotee needs to make a quarter of an effort, while another one more portion can be received as a grace of the Guru, but for the complete fulfillment of one’s spiritual goal, God’s blessing is necessary. As a result of a yogi or sadhak’s efforts, and with an equal share of Guru’s grace, only 50% or half perfection can be attained. To attain complete perfection in one’s journey towards the attainment of the divine goal, it needs to be a combination of blessings of both the Guru and God.

Similar to God, the power of Guru is omnipresent. He is omniscient and knows what every devotee, disciple, and kriyaban thinks. Gurudeva used to say, “I’m not able to mentally associate well with reluctant kriyabans, but those who have given me the right to govern them or aspire for my advice, I always remain associated with them.”. Being always connected with the disciple, the Guru can see everything including the past and future of the disciple and hence guides him/her accordingly. This guidance is possible with the help of spiritual powers; the Guru uses the spiritual powers of his soul for the welfare of the disciple.

If the disciple wants to be a receiver of the power transmitted by the guru, then he must remain pure, inquisitive, and diligent. When the Guru and the disciple become enlightened, their spiritual knowledge becomes fully illuminated. Such people become real gurus and disciples.

The power of the Guru is all-pervading. It is not that the teachings imparted by the Guru are only helpful in different circumstances, or the effect of his blessings is transient, the disciples can experience the presence of the power of Guru, forever, by his will.

At the time of kriya initiation, divine power is exchanged between the master and the disciple. In between this exchange, there is eternal love and obedience along with a condition, and that condition is agreeing to the continuous practice of kriya, which establishes a strong bond of consciousness between the master and the disciple.
